The history of the Dutch East India Company, the VOC, is still visible in Enkhhuizen today. In the 17th and 18th century the VOC was the largest trading company in the world that travelled to Asiatic countries with its beautiful ships to conduct trade. The favourable location beside the IJsselmeer made it attractive to base a 'VOC Chamber' here. The 'Drommedaris', the defence towers in the port, and the centre with its historical buildings are reminders of these prosperous times. The Ship-in-a-Bottle Museum, Fisheries Museum and Enhuizen Almanak Museum are also worth visiting. Families with young children should definitely not miss Sprookjeswonderland (Fairytale Wonderland). In the Middle Ages, the city experienced a heyday thanks to the trade with England, France, and Scandinavia. The medieval legend of the Lady of Stavoren symbolises the mysterious decline of the city after a period of prosperity. Nowadays, the Stavoren economy mainly revolves around water sports, especially during the summer. Stavoren is one of the main access roads from the IJsselmeer to the Frisian lakes. 7. Night | Makkum |
The prosperity that the Zuiderzee brought to Makkum is reflected in the stately merchant houses. Makkum used to be an important trading centre with stone bakeries, tile bakeries, shipyards, and shell limekilns. In the nineteenth century, the activity reduced as a result of the silting up of the Zuiderzee. Only the shipbuilding and potteries remained. These industries are, in addition to the fishing, still flourishing in this village. Info Makkum Wikipedia |
